There was some hostility from the Planning Authority to the idea of an extension of any kind to this former barn, which had been extended and altered a number of years ago to create a home for our clients.

To overcome this we separated the sun room and gallery from the main house with a 'study' link. The separation of the sun room was given greater emphasis by shifting its geometry.

This had the further advantage of opening up the garden area to capture south facing sunlight and views. The link is designed such that when viewed from the village it appears as a garden wall which joins the house to an outbuilding, and is simple and plain in design. This overcame the concerns of the Planning Authority and left us free to create a playful and glazed façade to the garden.
